Install AVL58 video link to upgrade kit on phantom

Postby patricksc » Sat Aug 24, 2013 7:21 pm

I have a phantom and just installed the new upgrade kit with the Zenmuse gimble. I cant find any installation instructions on how to hook up the AVL58 video link with this set up. Does anyone know where I can get this information or give me a step by step intruction.

Thank you!

You should find something suitable on YouTube.

I think if i cut the video cable on the transmitter then I can connect them to the video wires on the new upgraded board in the phantom.....Any one know if this is correct? I dont want to cut the cable before I know it will work.....
I also just heard that dji is working on another addition to make it "Plug and play" video out.....

I am looking for an answer on this too...if you find anything please post. I can solder it if need be; but just want to be sure of the correct wires to choose.

The 3.5mm plug on the DJI downlink transmitter was originally designed for the Zenmuse Z15, so it matches the jack for the GCU on both the Z15 as well as the H3-2D:

"Tip" contact = 12V+ power
"Ring" middle contact = Video signal
"Sleeve" bottom contact = GND

So if you want a "plug and play" solution, simply buy a 3.5mm stereo jack and wire it to the 3-wire connector on the upgrade board as follows:

"Tip" contact = leave unconnected; you don't need power here
"Ring" middle contact = solder to yellow wire on 3-pin cable from upgrade board (video signal wire)
"Sleeve" bottom contact = solder to brown GND wire on 3-pin cable from upgrade board

Now just plug the AVL-58 into your new jack and you should be good to go. :)

Will that also power it though?

Sorry I'm just confused why I don't need to hookup the tip for power. How else is it getting power?

This is the cable that came with my transmitter. Image

Sorry for the triple post, but I understand the stereo jack solution - that seems fine. As for power though, do I need to cut off this plug and replace it with a male balance plug that can connect to my lipo 3s 2200mah battery that the phantom uses in order for the tx to get power or is there a way to solder this onto the board directly?

You don't want to power it through the 3.5mm plug because the AVL doesn't get power that way, and I wouldn't use the Vcc+ on the red wire from the upgrade board anyway simply because it's *very* fine and the AVL draws a fair amount of current. Would probably work, but much cleaner just to cut the power connector off the split cable and solder directly to the main board. You can go directly to the battery leads or to any of the ESC connector pads, being sure to respect Vcc- and GND polarities.

I'm working on hooking up my AVL58 as well.

How do you power up the Receiver? I don't see how this maroon cord with the two right angle plugs will work with my phantom batteries or anything else.

Does anyone know the voltage for it?

Yes it will take 12V. I have a smallhd dp7 and I plan on using vmount batteries to power both my smallhd and rx via 12V dtap. I just got mine working yesterday and tried powering it via a 12V power cable from a hard drive dock I own since I didn't have the ptap cable yet. It worked great!

Thanks!

One other question: If you have the Zenmuse H32D, where are you mounting the TX?
