DJI F550 BAD flying times on cold weather

Postby andycorleone » Wed Nov 20, 2013 4:58 pm

outside is -1 degrees Celsius (around 31 F) I really experiencing very short flying times:
around 2 minutes with 5000mha 4s and 1 minute with 6000mha 3S

This is my setup : F550 - wookong-m and Gopro Zenmuse . I had run about 60 batteries charges on this setup I have 10 batteries in total . When I switch to the 3s lipos I change the settings on the wookong-m

I don't think the batteries are fully used I can see the RED Led of the Wookong warning me about low battery but when I go and charged them it do it in about 15minutes at 5.0A

This is really frustrating I'm not sure if a faulty component is causing this or just the cold weather. any help would be really appreciated

When you recharge the batteries, how many mAh are you putting back in? in 15mins you are only putting back in approximately 1250mAh on the 5000mAh battery @ 5Amps (are your batteries able to stand 5A/Hour charge rate?) so you are only using 25% of your charge. Cold weather will affect your time but not that much.

Thanks for you reply, I'm not sure how to find out how many mAh I'm putting back.

I'm using a IMAX B6-AC Charger/Discharger 1-6 Cells charger

Your charger should tell you how many mAh you are putting back in as it charges. Also, have you set up the red warning light alarm properly? Using the 4s 5000 battery, what alarm settings have you set?

Silly question perhaps, but are you keeping your batteries warm until just before mounting them? I get a lot of cold weather flying here in Canada, but I normally see less than 10% reduction in flight times. When I'm going flying, I put all of my charged batteries in a small insulated lunch bag, along with a pocket hand warmer. They are generally around 22C at flight time in -20 air temps.

Warm batts make a HUGE difference. If I have a need to fly n extremely cold temps, I also have a thin neoprene sleeve that I made to stuff the battery in and reduce the heat loss as much as I can during flight. It's ugly but it works.

i have the exact same issue. i use to get 10 min in the summer and spring. now that its cold out here on the east coast I'm down to like 1min. i have 2 turnigy 4500 3s nano techs. i had them running a f450 with stock motors and esc's. i just built a f550 with all new dji e300 motors and esc's with the same results. i don't know what it is exempt the weather.

Wow! That's Crazy!

I Was curious since I normally fly with two 3S 5000mah Hyperions, so I went out today and flew several batteries, one at a time. Temperature was -12C, & I'm flying a 550 with stock motors & ESC's and 10in. factory props. I have a Zenmuse and GoPro mounted, a Fatshark 700 line FPV camera, Fatshark Vtx and PhotshipOne skids. I didn't do the same thing as I normally would re: keeping the batteries warm; I just tossed them in my flight bag before I left the house
Of the 5 batteries I flew, the shortest flight time I got with both cameras powered was 4 min. 56 sec. and the longest was 6 min. 17 sec. I'd expect somewhere around 6 1/2 - 7 minutes of flying time on one of these batteries in summer temps.

You may want to try keeping them as warm as possible prior to flying, and try to insulate them if you can in flight. As I said in my earlier post, I made a thin neoprene sleeve to stuff them in before I fly them, and it works pretty well to keep them warm for the few minutes they're in the air. They seem to generate enough heat from discharge to keep them nice and warm in flight.
